1857 Uprising Chronicles
Rebels & Ruins
Lucknow
“The 1857 Uprising, also known as the First War of Indian Independence, was a major rebellion against British rule in India. Sparked by discontent over policies like the Doctrine of Lapse and the order to the Indian soldiers in the British Army to use animal fat greased cartridges, it began in Meerut Cantonment and quickly spread across other towns of North India. Led by figures like Rani Lakshmi Bai, Bahadur Shah Zafar, and Nana Sahib, it saw fierce battles in Delhi, Kanpur, and Lucknow. Though ultimately suppressed, it marked the beginning of India’s struggle for independence, leading to the end of East India Company rule and the establishment of direct British Crown governance over India.”
