A Legacy of Trade and Justice

Streets of Influence

Chennai

T. Nagar, or Thyagaraya Nagar, was the first planned neighbourhood of Madras (now Chennai), developed in the 1920s as part of a major urban expansion under the British rule. Named after Justice P. Thyagaraya Chetty, a leader of a political party, it was designed to decongest ‘George Town’ and provide residential and commercial spaces. Planned with a grid layout, wide roads, and parks, T. Nagar became a thriving commercial hub, especially known for its textile and jewellery stores. Over time, it evolved into one of Chennai’s busiest shopping districts while retaining its historical significance as a pioneering urban development.

A Legacy of Trade and Justice is a walking tour through T. Nagar, Chennai’s first planned neighbourhood, where politics and commerce shaped the city’s destiny. Explore iconic businesses, discover the political parties’ influence, and uncover how this vibrant district became a powerhouse of trade and socio-economic change.
