A Revival Story

Chennai

A Kodali Karuppur sari is a gem in the encumbered treasure trove of Indian weaves. It evolved under the patronage of the Maratha ruler, Serfoji Raja Bhonsle Chhatrapati II, and was weaved exclusively for the queens of the Thanjavur state up to the 19th century. Being a rare and expensive craft with very few pieces preserved for posterity, the Kodali Karuppur sari was on the verge of obscurity. It was the Craft Education and Research Centre at the Kalakshetra Foundation that reinvented this rare craft.

The Textile Tour of Kalakshetra takes you through the story and spirit of Kalakshetra, while stopping by the iconic spots that are dedicated to preserving India’s rich arts and crafts, music and dance forms.
