A Stitch for Freedom

Needles of Empowerment

Delhi

New Delhi serves as a transit home for Afghan refugees escaping instability in their home country. Their refugee status offers little security, limiting jobs and opportunities. To survive, many women use their traditional skills in crocheting, sewing, and embroidery to up-cycle apparel scraps into handcrafted decorations. This social enterprise sustains incomes for 60-70 refugee women, empowering them amid uncertainty. Struggling to integrate into an unfamiliar society, they rely on community support while holding onto dreams of stability. Despite hardships, their resilience and craftsmanship help them navigate challenges, creating a sustainable livelihood while awaiting a future in a country that offers dignity and security.

A Stitch for Freedom is an inspiring tour that supports the resilience of Afghan refugee women living in Delhi. Witness their craftsmanship as they up-cycle fabric scraps into beautiful handcrafted decorations, sustaining their livelihoods through traditional embroidery, sewing, and crocheting in this impactful social enterprise.
