An Art that Narrates a Story

Mumbai

The Warli Art is native to the Warli Tribe of Maharashtra. Their monosyllabic paintings use a basic graphic vocabulary: a circle, a triangle, and a square, that demonstrates human life, customs, and traditions indigenous to the region. One of the aspects of Warli painting is the “Tarpa dance”- the Tarpa, a trumpet like instrument, is played in turns by different men. Men and women entwine their hands and move in a circle around the Tarpa player which is believed to resemble the circle of life.
