City of Many Faiths (Old Fort)

Legends, Faiths, and Forts

Delhi

Purana Qila, or the Old Fort, is one of the oldest forts in Delhi, with its history tracing back to the Mahabharata era when it was believed to be part of Indraprastha. The present structure was built by Sher Shah Suri in the 16th century and later modified by Mughal Emperor Humayun. The fort features massive sandstone walls, three grand gates, and notable structures like the Qila-i-Kuhna Mosque and Sher Mandal. Excavations have revealed continuous habitation since ancient times. Today, it stands as a testament to Delhi’s layered history, blending Mughal, Afghan, and pre-Islamic influences in its architecture.

Delhi - City of Many Faiths unfolds at Purana Qila, a 16th-century fortress rooted in legends, showcasing Delhi’s rich spiritual and architectural heritage.
