Love is Love is Love

Mumbai

India has had a long queer history with even her divinity donning gender-neutral avatars. Plucking a page from the Indian Epic Mahabharata, Aravan had agreed to being offered as sacrifice to Goddess Kali for the Pandavas to win on the condition that he be married before his death. Lord Krishna transformed himself into a beautiful woman to fulfil the wishes of Aravan. This episode unfolds in Koothandavar Temple in Villupuram district of Tamil Nadu during the 18-day Koovagam festival where a large number of trangenders dress up as brides of Aravan.

A Queer Day Out in Mumbai explores the facets that frame queer life in the city on a visit to a temple of a Goddess worshipped by the traditional transgender community and spending time with a fabulous drag queen.
