“When on a survey for the Travancore state in 1930s, the renowned ornithologist, Dr. Salim Ali stumbled upon this magical piece of land that boasted of close to 300 species of birds in just 25 km2. Instituted in 1983 on his recommendation, Thattekad Bird Sanctuary which is now 300 bird species strong was the first bird sanctuary of Kerala. To this day it remains one of the best birding hotspots in south India.”
