The fierce Amrita Devi Bishnoi, from the Bishnoi community settled deep in the heart of the desert, sacrificed her life along with 300 others for trees that were being felled to build a new palace for the King of Jodhpur. The Bishnois are known as the first environmentalists of India who are also single-handedly responsible for the survival of the endangered species of Black Bucks in these parts.”
