The Fall and Rise of Dilli (Mehrauli Archaeological Park)

Ruins of the Capital

Delhi

Mehrauli, one of Delhi’s oldest inhabited areas, has a rich history dating back over a thousand years. It was the capital of the Tomar and Chauhan Rajputs before the Delhi Sultanate’s rise. Prithviraj Chauhan ruled from here before his defeat by Muhammad Ghori in 1192. The area became the first seat of the Delhi Sultanate under Qutb-ud-din Aibak, who initiated the construction of the Qutb Minar. Mehrauli remained significant through Mughal and British rule, known for its Sufi shrines, historical tombs, and Mehrauli Archaeological Park, which showcases Delhi’s layered history from medieval to colonial times.

The Fall and Rise of Dilli unfolds in Mehrauli Archaeological Park, where Delhi’s layered history comes alive. Walk through 200 acres of lush greenery, exploring grand yet forgotten monuments from Rajput, Sultanate, Mughal, and British eras. Discover captivating stories of power, conquest, and resilience in Delhi’s oldest capital.
