The First War of Independence

Delhi

On 11th May 1857, 300 rebellious East India Company cavalrymen marched into Delhi and proclaimed the octogenarian Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar as the leader of a mutiny against the British. What followed was a bloody and brutal struggle that resulted in the massacre of Delhi and the end of the Mughals. Most of the monuments from pre-Mutiny Delhi were damaged, demolished, or deliberately altered after the Mutiny.

Understand the dramatic events of the Uprising on our Mutiny Trail as you visit some of the major landmarks that are still standing.
