The Wells of Life

Jodhpur

Stepwells are architectural marvels unique to India. While its main purpose was water storage, it was also the go to place for people to escape the scorching heat. The Chand Baori, in Abhaneri (Rajasthan) with over 3,500 steps and 13 stories provides a respite of 5-6 degrees at the bottom of the well in comparison to the surface. While the village itself is now in ruins, it is believed, this stepwell was also a popular place for social gatherings back in the days.
