Bengal in Benaras
Varanasi
“It is believed the first Bengali settlers came to Benares in 1757 to settle around 7 temples constructed by Rani Bhababi – a noted Zemindar of Bengal. A majority of the Bengali settlers here were of the priestly caste who either taught Sanskrit in schools or worked as priests. This settlement has been immortalised by Academy Award winning filmmaker Satyajit Ray in his movies that capture the Bengali Tola in the serpentine lanes of Varanasi, and her ghats.”
In our Bengali Tola Riverside Walk, walk through this neighbourhood as you visit hidden Mother Goddess Kali shrines and enjoy the vistas of life along the riverside that ends at the historic ritual-bathing site called Dasashwamedh Ghat.
