The Elysium Hill of Shimla

Shimla

What is Auckland School today was once Belvedere, the house of Alexander Malcom Jacob, the man who sold the Jacob Diamond, the fifth largest in the world to the Nizam of Hyderabad in 1891. Sold as a slave to a Turk, he came to Shimla in 1870 and started a business trading in precious gemstones and curios. A handsome, magnetic and mysterious man, he was one of the most sought after locals of Shimla. The enigmatic character Lurgan Sahib of Rudyard Kipling’s novel “Kim” was inspired by him.

On The Sleeping Beauty Trail, get a bird’s eye view of the city from Elysium Hill – the highest point in Shimla and visit important sites to learn how Shimla has evolved over the years.
