The Tiger’s Tryst with Silk

Mysore

Mysore’s tryst with silk began during the reign of Tipu Sultan – the Tiger of Mysore. Fascinated by a silk cloth presented to him by the ambassador of Qing-dynasty China, he sent a delegation to Bengal and China to bring back silkworms and secrets to rearing it. The silkworms procured from Bengal were of Chinese origin that shed their hibernating habit in the climes of this South Indian state making them the “Pure Mysore Race”. This set the base for the flourishing silk industry in the then Mysore State.

Learn about Tipu Sultan’s life on a visit to the island town of Srirangapatna and what makes Mysore Silk unique at the oldest Silk factory in south India in our Mysore’s Inheritance and the Tiger’s Legacy tour.
