Learning About the Fishing Communities of Kerala
Kochi
“Along the coastline of Kerala, you will find houses clustered near the shore, almost all of which have witnessed generations of fishing folks. These close-knit clusters eventually became villages, with narrow lanes leading to the beach where boats are docked. The community is organized around a central fish market where local fishermen sell their daily catch. Traditional houses are usually made of wood, with tiled roofs and courtyards. The village also includes a small temple or a community hall, and a workshop for boat building and net mending. The fishing economy forms the backbone of these villages, with each member playing a vital role in sustaining local practices and preserving maritime traditions.”
Visit a local fishing harbour to get introduced to the nitty-gritties of the fishing economy, and get an insight into the lives of the local fishermen. Later go and meet a local family in the nearby village for a scrumptious breakfast and to understand the nuances of a rural household.
