Vineyard Visit and Lunch with Local Wine Aficionados
Wine Odyssey
Bangalore
“Viticulture in India dates back to the Indus Valley civilization, with grapevines introduced from Persia. Wine-making was particularly encouraged during the British rule but declined post-independence due to India’s policy of alcohol prohibition. The industry revived in the late 1980s with globalization. Chateau Indage pioneered commercial wine-making, launching India’s first sparkling wine, Marquise de Pompadour, in 1986, often called “Champagne” by Indians. Inspired by this, Kanwals Grover established vineyards in Nandi Hills near Bangalore, releasing Grover Wines’ first vintage in 1992, marking a new era for Indian winemaking.”
