“The story goes that Meenakshi, the presiding deity of Madurai, appeared out of a sacrificial fire as a 3 year old girl with 3 breasts. It was prophesised that her third breast would vanish when she found a man who was her equal. On one of her conquests which lead her to the Himalayas, she met her match in Shiva, one of the 3 holy trinities in Hindu Mythology. They were married with great pomp and ceremony in the city of Madurai which is enacted during the 2 week long Chitirai Festival every year.”
